Responding to Verbal Assaults
Verbal attacks can range from direct assaults to indirect or hidden assaults. Hidden assaults can arise out of the choice and manner of placing stress to particular words in a sentence to actually being lured into playing a verbal game with another that will leave us not feeling good. The primary underlying cause for initiating a verbal assault is often behavior modification or the desire to injure.
The primary sources for data pertaining to verbal attacks are three books by Suzette Haden Elgin titled “The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense” (1980), “More on the Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense” (1983), “The Final Word on the Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense” (1987) and “You Can’t say that to me!” (1995) and one book by Eric Berne titled “Games People Play” (1964).
